My Interior Design Office

I am getting ready to makeover my home office. I have two offices, but this is my own personal space. I am an Interior Designer and need ample storage. Luckily this room has a large walk in closet. Most of my working drawings are done on the computer, but I have a drafting table and know how to use it!

I found these twins at Marshalls. They have fantastic lamps at great prices. If you see something you like snatch them up, or you will lose them. I need good light when working, and these are fine for general lighting. I like the sparkly fun look they have, and might do something funky to the shades.

I am deciding if I am going to keep these boxes. If I use toile for my drapery I may find something else. I picked them up to live with them a couple of days, while I make my final decision.

This is my BAG OF TRICKS, and it is heavy! I use a bag to carry my supplies when I visit with clients. I have several, but they must be large, and sturdy with lots of pockets, and be ever so CHIC!

I do residential design and specialize in kitchen and baths. This is BIG BOSS, my trusted tape measure. There is definitely a finesse to accurately measuring for a job. I could probably use a larger one, because kitchens have gotten so huge the past few years. A good tape measure for design work must be rigid, because a designer often measures alone. It also must be easy to read. A few design friends have switched to the laser type, which I am thinking of investing in. They are invaluable when you need to measure a tall space and long distance.

I have had a few people write me they are interested in becoming an Interior Designer. I think that is great, it is a rewarding and fun career. The best advice I can give is go to a quality school. As long as they are aligned with ASID you can't go wrong. I believe the most important thing to understand about design work is how crucial it is to develop good working relationships with your clients. You can be the most wonderful designer, but if you are a difficult diva you won't last long in this business.

I have been busy with work this past week, and have a measure this afternoon. I enjoy viewing my blog friend's beautiful work, and look forward to catching up with everyone soon!

  1. I just got home from a trip to Marshall's, and I did stop by the lamp aisle.

I am using black and white and robin's egg blue in my office. I need to post pictures soon-

  2. I'd be willing to play "Let's Make a Deal" on the boxes if you decide not to use them. :)

The lamps are beautiful. I'm looking for something new to go in my bedroom, but I'm not sure if they wouldn't be a bit too modern to go with what I have in there.

I love reading your blog - you have such pretty things and good ideas.

  7. Cathy,
It looks like you are off to a great start!!! I love the lamps. I am also a huge fan of toile...following in the footsteps of the great Charles Faudree!!! I have done some designing myself. Never full-time but little projects here and there. I did the design for a few banks and some residential work for friends. My daughter is in design school right now. When she finishes we hope to do something together. Can't wait to see the finished product!!! Have a wonderful day!!!
    XOXO
