Whimsical Windows!

Welcome
Be sure and visit Julia's Hooked on Fridays and Melissa's A Beautiful Life blog parties to see other fun posts!

Shifting to a glorious spring after a long winter wonderland feels pretty fantastic right about now! I am preparing to have the outside of my home painted and add a flower box to a prominent front window. I am definately hooked on window boxes and I have been scouting around for design inspiration and found wonderful ideas from photos including some I took on trips to Europe. Here are a few that put a smile on my face that I thought would be fun to share. This colorful over the top drapery presentation framed the front of a crepe shop I lunched at in Paris. As I recall it was located not far from the Picasso Museum.
You may have figured it out, but Paris happens to be one of my favorite cities. When traveling, I attempt to speak the language, (usually badly) just small snippets and phrases. Words like hello, thank you, please and most important restroom! I keep a sense of humor and never venture without my favorite Eyewitness Travel Guide book. In my humble opinion they are the best. A smile and friendly attitude takes you most anywhere.

Venice, (Venezia) Italy is truly a special magical place. During Carnival it reminds me of a Disney World for adults filled with romantic old world charm and quirky, winding, narrow streets. I often wondered how they managed to maneuver a house full of furniture in and out of the city. When traveling, I like to visit main tourist sights, but always venture off the beaten path. Boats are available, which you use like a bus around the city and you definitely get your exercise, because you walk everywhere.
In the afternoon colorful fresh fruit and vegetable stands suddenly appear out of nowhere for the locals to purchase from. European refrigerators are tiny and American type grocery stores non existent. However, there are mouthwatering pastry shops on every corner.
Pictured above is one of the historical Venetian homes located on the Grand Canal. I was in awe of the craftsmanship and skill level required to build these magnificent structures. All countries had their schools of training but Paris, France was the epicenter for teaching the trade of stone work in Europe until the turn of the century. To reach the level of master it took fifteen years of apprenticeship. I once attended a seminar at the Portland Art Museum in Oregon, which covered this fascinating topic.

What is a window box if it is not overflowing with eye catching flowers? I am a fan of red geraniums which I use on my back deck every summer. You can have a look by viewing my Misty Morning post to see what I have done.

Only in Italy does hanging laundry look so appealing!

Venice is surrounded by several smaller islands, Murano is famous for its blown glass factories and Burano, pictured here is known as the lace making island. Burano is quiet and provincial, definitely worth the side trip to see its colorful and quaint homes.

Such a pretty combination of soft pinks and purples.

The English version.

This was taken in Germany, besides the colorful window boxes, I love the "wall words". I don't know what the translation is, but what a great look!

  1. What lovely flowers cascading from the window
boxes. The English version was not as large
but lovely never the less. Hope we see your
new window box when it is finished and flowing
    with flowers. Hugs, Myke

  14. Wonderful. Summer is here! And it's true "Only in Italy does hanging laundry look so appealing!" Oh, and the German wall words, the one to the right is simply the name of the restaurant, the one to the left is saying Rooms available in a very old fashioned way... (yeah, I'm Swiss, German speaking).

  21. Good Morning Cathy, Thank you for the sweet comments on my blog.

I am in awe of these beautiful pictures of windows and window boxes and the charm of the Italy pictures. I would love to go there some day.

I had never been anywhere abroad, but five years ago my husband took me to England,(he was born there), and we spent a month. While we were there we took a ferry and went over to France for a day. It was charming. I loved the fesh fruit/vegetable and flower stands everywhere.
And I loved the scenery and the statues and the beach and the chateaus. I was sorry we didn't have longer to take it all in.

We went quite a few places in England and spent some time in Poole where some family live. My husband was born in the Sheffield area and so we went there and to Stocksbridge where his mother was born and lived all of her life.

Everything was so pretty in the spring. It was still very chilly and we needed lots of hot tea to warm us from the inside out! (smile)

We began and ended in London which was so interesting too. We did alot of walking and bus riding, and some taxi riding too.

We saw so many castles while we were there, and so many sculptured, gardens and grounds. We also went to museums as well as out of the way places and markets.

So, I am hoping that someday we can go back and also extend our trip to places like Germany where my husband was stationed in the army, and I would love to go to Tuscany, and other places in Italy.

But through your beautiful pictures I feel as though I have already been many lovely places.

  22. Love your pictures and memories of your travels.

Have been to both Paris and Venice and I remember the lovely window boxes in the Black Forest in Germany too.

Unfortunately here in Ireland they are not seen so frequently.

  24. I miss seeing all the beautiful flowers & window boxes in Europe. I most familiar with the ones in Austria (filled usually with ivy geranium). Fremdenzimmer= guest room
Gasthof zur Schwanne (can't actually read it) is the name of the Guest House.

  27. Cathy, I love those windows! Especially the ones of those petunias! Beautiful sights off the windows. I wish I was there with you as I've never been to Europe. They sure know to romanticize simplicity don't they?

  29. Cathy,
Thank you so much for your words of encouragement and your prayers!!! Little Connor has been sick for so long it is sometimes hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Our whole community is praying for him and his family and have been doing so since his first diagnosis four years ago.

God is good and I know that He hears our prayers and I trust in His will no matter the outcome. He has the power to heal and the love to comfort in the absence of healing.

Thank you again...sooo.much...for your prayers. It means the world to me!!!

    Have a wonderful evening!!!
    XOXO
    Cathy

  35. Thanks Sue,
Isn’t it ridiculous I couldn’t remember if I took that photo in Rothenberg (the walled city) or in the town near the German castle Neuschwanstein. We go to so many places when we travel, because we like to see and do as much as possible and sometimes it becomes a blur. ~Cathy~

  40. Thanks for the "follow!"
You're in luck because I'm from Holland originally (lived in Los Angeles for 20+ years now) and we lived one year in Berlin (hubby lived 3 years there).

I hope you went inside Musee Picasso! It's worth it -if you like Picasso.

The House in Germany - on the left it says Fremdenzimmer (rooms for guests(literally Fremden means strangers) and on the right is says, like Sue already mentioned,
Gasthof (guesthouse) zur Schranne (to Schranne).
    Cheers, Jeannette

  44. I love your photos , especially the ones of the deck with the beautiful deck boxes and dreamy looking weather. The cascading flowers from balconies were beautiful. I visited my daughter when she lived in Germany and the window and balcony boxes were loaded with flowers, I would love to know how they keep them beautiful. Mine never stay pretty for very long.
