I have dreamed of a pretty window box for under this garage window since moving into my home several years ago. I priced them out and OUCH, I sure felt the pinch big time. My the price was dear! It is a long window and the cheapest box I liked was $280.00. It needed to be low maintenance and made from material that would hold up to harsh winters so I held off buying a cheaper variety.I was absolutely thrilled when I spotted this 65” lightweight fiberglass container for $10.00 at an estate sale last weekend. It started the wheels in my head turning and I knew I could make it into the window box I wanted. It was a beige color so with the assistance of a can of $6.00 Rustoleum black spray paint the magical metamorphosis began.
I needed something to mount the window box to the brick so I used 3 galvanized steel support brackets from the hardware store. The window is close to the shrubs below, so I did not want to use more expensive decorative support brackets. These were $6.00 each and even though they would not show from the top I sprayed them black to make absolutely sure they would blend in. This also provided an added layer of protection from the weather.

My hubby was kind enough to assist me AGAIN, thanks honey! He used special brick screws and anchors to attach the support brackets to the house. He then drilled a few small holes into the bottom of the container for drainage.
I used a great tip from a talented lady who is my garden guru Toosite @ TOOTSIE TIME for how to make an inexpensive liner. I simply took a couple heavy black plastic trash bags and poked a few holes into the bottom with a pencil then placed them into the container. I fill it with potting soil then cut away the excess plastic before adding a variety of colorful flowers.

I planted spike (dracaena) the tall green plant for the center focal point. I surrounded it by adding pink geraniums, white cascading alyssum, blue cascading lobelia and finished it off with a trailing green ivy. I planted these a bit late in the season, but should still have a couple months of color before the snows set in. During the holiday season I plan on filling it overflowing with red berries and holly so am excited to finally have it.

I chose colors that work with my front entry door wreath. I made last spring and wrote a tutorial if you want one for yourself. You can find the instructions here.

ReplyDeleteWhat a great windowbox -- and don't you love it on the "cheap"!
ReplyDeleteMartha
Martha,
ReplyDeleteMy father used to tell me it was "inexpensive not cheap!" but yes, definately yes.
That looks amazing! You are a very talented lady - and the flowers are arranged so beautifully, too!
ReplyDeleteCathy, Thanks for visiting my blog and leaving a comment. I am glad that you have fun with your sisters. I am sur you all share lots of "Girl Talk"!
ReplyDeleteI just lost my only sister in January and I am missing her so much. However I do have two friends that I think of as my sisters, as we are very, very close. And many other girlfriends and sisters in Christ as well, so I am blessed. I am also forming new freindships with my blog followers and I am enjoying that very much.
I LOVED your window box! I am so glad that you found a bargain like that and could work your magic on it as usual. ((smile)) I think your front doors are beautiful and I also like the wreath you made. You truly have a gift,...as well as good training and schooling!
Thanks again for sharing your talents with us here in blogland!

Beautiful! The closest I come to "DIY" is hiring someone to "DIFM" ("Do It For Me"). So, not very close at all then...;)
ReplyDeleteLooks like $280.00 to me at that cost reduction of a find. This is lovely and your choice of flowers are just perfect for this fabulous find

Cathy, what a fabulous find! You transformed it beautifully! I love window boxes and I know how expensive they are. Thanks for another wonderful tutorial.
ReplyDeleteTina
Great looking window box!! The colors are so pretty with the black. I have some narrow plastic boxes with attached trays that I put right on the brick window ledge. I use three or four plastic door stops to keep the boxes level, and they stay up through the most severe summer storms we have here in eastern Colorado. Only when the soil is dry in the winter have they ever fallen off.
ReplyDeleteKathy that is gorgeous! What a unique idea and such a deal on it! Love the way you arranged the stunning flowers as well. Can you find some window boxes for me? LOL!
ReplyDeleteStop by and enter my giveaway if you have time my friend. ~Melissa :)

It looks great! I'd love to have some on the front of my house :)
ReplyDeleteThat is so funny about the front load soap issue. I bet you had suds and bubbles everywhere. I did that one time in a jet tub when Steve and I visited the smokies and put bubble bath in and turned on the jets and went back to the bubbles comming down the steps and what a mess I had. I finally got that relax bath though.
ReplyDeleteCathy, Brava! Your new windowbox looks absolutely stunning ~ I love the flowers and plants you chose and how it contrasts so beautifully against the brick.
ReplyDeleteOff now to learn how to make that LOVELY wreath! Thank you for sharing so generously. :)

ReplyDeleteSherri:)
Hi Cathy! This is just lovely! And I love the transformation form planter to window box...so clever! I know you will enjoy it!...Debbie
ReplyDeleteHi Cathy, Another great learning opportunity
ReplyDeleteand good money saving ideas...estate sales are
very popular along the Front Range of Colorado
and are amanaged by people who know how to
display items in their best light. Prices
are very reasonable and surprises are always
popping up. Thank you for another good lesson.
I would guess that your new paint color on your
home is a warm soft grey beige...I spotted it
between the windows in a narrow spot. Good
color to compliment the brick. Hugs, Myke
what a gorgeous find, and the money you saved, it looks beautiful
ReplyDeleteLove how your window box turned out! Even better is your inexpensive find and jazzing it up the way you want it. Awesome!
ReplyDeleteIt's not cheap at all. The box turned out amazing.
