French Kitchen Charm!

If the fleur-de-lis is the symbol of the French monarchy, is there anything more perfect then the proud rooster to represent the countryside!

Pierre Deux's French Country

The Country French kitchen conjures up images of gathering around a rustic table to enjoy a meal with family and friends. It's being surrounded by copper pots, wrought iron fixtures, earthy terracotta tile, farm house sinks and at the center a magnificent stove!

Windows are simply adorned, but a pretty swath of lace is appropriate.

Rustic shutters create drama and can easily be added to a modern home for a bit of old world charm. They bring an architectural element into the space, and the wrought iron hinges adds an authentic touch.

Better Homes & Gardens Kitchens

This luxurious American interpretation of a French kitchen is stunning, and what it lacks in authenticity makes up for in functionality. The overhead ventilation system cleverly mimics a French plaster hooded fireplace. The use of a wrought iron light fixture is fitting. Overhead cabinets that vary in height adds interest and movement. The center island is a different color, and the curved granite countertop is supported by typically French style corbels.
Old world kitchens are undeniably special and visually wonderful, but often are missing a proper work triangle and adequate storage. Anyone who cooks frequently can appreciate the trade off between modern conveniences and the romantic ideal of a period kitchen. When it comes to understanding work triangles, landing spaces and prep areas, from experience, I suspect no country has studied kitchens as in depth as Americans. Ideally, the period charm that is so appealing can be gracefully incorporated to fit a modern lifestyle.

Provence Home

For these period home examples I found properties currently for sale in Provence. Notice the heavy overhead beams and thick plaster walls. In some areas the stones are actually peeking through. There is high open shelving filled with yellow glazed earthenware vessels. To the side is a french door, notice how deep the inset window is on the far right. It's hard to miss the huge black stove. There is not much counter space, especially on the right side, it looks great, but might be a bit awkward when you need to put a heavy pot down. It may not be perfectly laid out, but it has so much character and is such a charming kitchen!

Better Homes & Gardens Kitchens

This American kitchen has an impressive dual fuel range from AGA as it's focal point. It imparts old world style with modern amenities. There is an overhead ventilation system tucked under the curved panel, which is not present in any of the period kitchens shown. I would love to own a stove such as this, but until that day comes I can have a pretty piece of pottery filled with wooden spoons like the one that sits next to the stove.

Provence Home

This cheery Provence kitchen has several affordable items that could be used to add some French flavor into your home. The colorful tablecloth is typical of the region along with open shelving for dishes and hanging copper pots.

These stylized Provencal French cotton fabrics are filled with vivid blues, sunny yellows, striking reds and shades of greens. These lovely patterns contain squares, stripes and ovals, olives, lemons and an assortment of flowers.

Luberon Collection

The Luberon region is filled with villages located high between the Alps and Provence. These pieces have an ivory lacquered patina that gives depth and warmth.

Country Living

No French kitchen would be complete without French bread and an assortment of cheeses topped off by a glass of red wine!

These antique homespun dishtowels double for placemats in this clever presentation.

French Country

This would be an easy look to recreate. Herbs in terracotta containers sitting on a wicker base. Even if you don't have a terracotta floor you can bring in the feel of it into your space.

  2. I just adore these kitchen designs! If ever I get a chance to remodel my kitchen just the way I want it.. it shall be in the French country styling. Just so functional, beautiful and cozy. So much better than a stark cold kitchen :)

  3. Hi Cathy! What an interesting post! In the area of France where I lived, many kitchens came with just a sink...you had to supply the rest! Cabinets were free-standing...more like pieces of furniture. Those that came with the works were called American kitchens. Our version of a French country kitchen certainly is more user-friendly by American standards, but you do lose some of the rustic charm. However, after handwashing my dishes three times a day, I was ready for a little less rustic! lol Enjoyed the photos...Debbie

  27. Did you get the car thing worked out yet? How is the kitchen, bath, stuff going. Remodeling and construction is so slow here... My hubby is home way too much... I am tugging my hair... I mean, ya know, fixing my hair just for him so I look good. Okay I confess I pulled most of it out.
Hope things are going good! Just thinking about you... blessings!

  28. Hi Lee (Inspired Comblogulations) thanks for checking on us. A few of you know my DD was hit & run Labor Day on the highway. She was shook up, but thankfully fine. However, her Jeep Wrangler needed repairs. I loaned her my vehicle so she did not have the expense of a rental on top of the $500 deductable. This meant I juggled sharing a car with my hubby for a few weeks. The shop returned her Jeep, but it will have to go back in to replace a part which has been on backorder. My DD is tiny and we laughed when she chose this tank of a vehicle to drive, but that decision saved her from serious injury.

  29. Hey Cathy,
Thank you for stopping by, I will be out of town tomorrow so I thought I would wish you a great weekend.
Remodeling is slow, slow, maybe even dead here, We are getting out of Dodge so to speak and trying to re-group, maybe change professions, just kidding, maybe not.
What to do, I know this much a starving artist isn't gonna help much... you think it's my subject matter?!#%?... teehee.
It may not sell but it is an ancient noble subject nontheless.
Anyway, hope it's a great Friday and weekend for you and yours.

  32. Cathy~I adore a multitude of these French Country design elements. I find a common theme throughout these photos and the reason I'm so smitten with the FC style. Every room has a warm and inviting setting, it lends the ambiance of all who enters are welcome.
A soft place to fall, relax, while enjoying a glass of fine wine and cheeses with a a hardy french bread.
That's my hearts desire for my family and friend who come to visit my french Country home.

    sweet wishes,
    Sara
